Cataloging the entrances to the underworld


In the storied Calaveras County town of Angels Camp, there is a pit in the rocky ground behind a gas station that is rumored to lead directly to Hell. It is partitioned from the above-world by an anemic fence of chain link and barbed wire, put there as more of an anti-liability measure than as any real attempt to dissuade the hellbent. Mark Twain did not write of this place.
